Christmas is fast approaching and seasons are fast changing. Sooner or later, it will be winter and one would need to factor in heating costs in the household budget. Add to that the need for new winter clothes and the impending holiday obligations – presents for families, friends and godchildren.

How would one prepare for the holidays without breaking one’s bank?

Plan ahead. Obviously, one needs to be prepared for major spending like the holidays. Decide what are your priorities. Is having new clothes or going to every Christmas party you are invited to more important? Will you need to travel?

As much as possible, make sure you buy in cash or debit card or avail of payday loans. Try hard not to charge everything to your card – it’s hard to start the new year all high up in debt. Consider giving cheap presents that are carefully thought of instead.

The budding gardener or the avid cook? Give him a book – there are bargain bookstores that have gems for a fraction of a cost! How about those relatives, small nieces and nephews in particular, who you only see during the holidays? Give out generic gifts in a bag. Sweet mini-treats like candies and chocolates will sweeten anyone’s day.
