If you are a smart woman (like me), you would be investing on a BBQ grill for your parties at home. For the reasons 1) BBQ parties are relaxed and always fun – no pressure on your part to clean ALL of your house since you can just have it outside or a part of your living room 2) You don’t need to learn how to cook – you just need to follow instructions on how to marinade, 3) Cooking is a breeze – and let’s face it, grilling is a man’s forte. You can bet a male guest will take over as soon as he sees you are having BBQs!

If you can afford it, investing on lynx grills is the way to go. But if you are not the serious griller and would only use it every now and then, the usual charcoal or gas grills will do. Just make sure you take care of your BBQ grill, no matter how it cost you. Having it covered when not in use is a given or else you will have rust on it within a year or less. To clean it only use mild dishwashing liquid and a soft cleaning rag to clean the visible areas. For stubborn dirt or mud, a plastic scrubbie works well without damaging the finish too much. A different idea for cleaning your barbecue grill involves the use of things you already have at home. Standard baking soda is a great natural cleaning agent and will help restore your grill like new. Just sprinkle a bit of the baking soda onto a dry brush and scrub the grill. Rinse clean and do the same thing on knobs and trays.

Here are some of the best BBQ tools you can have on hand to help you with your grills, even if it is as fancy as the fire magic grills:

1. Butane Lighter
2. Meat Thermometer
3. Chimney Starter
4. Grill Tongs
5. Timer
6. Basting Brush or Mop
7. Metal Spatula
8. Long-Handled Fork
9. BBQ Gloves
10. Wire Grill Brush

How was your Valentine’s Day?

We were one of the wise people who stayed home and did nothing because we knew there will be so much traffic and people out in the streets romanticizing the idea of the need to celebrate Valentine’s.

My husband surprised me with flowers and a book yesterday though. I knew he didn’t just pick that from the garden window boxes of our neighbor landlady because it was arranged and all. There are cute window flower boxes I would like to try after seeing the window plant boxes  of my landlady. It really added to the beautiful picture of her home, which she situated at the two windows flanking the entrance door of her house.

It looks something like this:

The question is – do I have a green thumb to make flowers in their boxes grow?

Times these days, it is so hard to get around with no car of your own. I can so relate. Even the average working career woman needs to have her own car for her independence, convenience and safety. Unfortunately, sometimes the budget for a brand new car defeats the purpose of getting one and getting a used car almost always turns out to be more expensive.

Well, not anymore. With  Drivetime, you can buy used cars and have warranties and guarantees! You are covered for 36 months with 36000 miles – major electrical and mechanical components are covered!

It’s a deal too good to be true!

Ever since I saw the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze I have been thinking of taking up pottery classes at the AMACO/Brent. They sell pottery equipments for professional potters and as crafts for moms and kids.

I am sure I would just need  beginner’s potter’s wheels for myself. This is the Amaco No.1 Potter’s Wheel, it is a two-speed, 1/3 hp portable table-top wheel for classrooms as well as beginners and experienced artists.

What I like about AMACO/Brent is that they have replaceable potters wheel parts so what I am going to get from them I can literally have forever.  Though I might just want my own wheels accessories and equipment like this one:

Brent® accessories include: QuickCenter clay centering system, WorkStation, WorkTables, a splash pan, seat, stool, leg extension kit (shown above) and bats. There are also self-hardening clays I need to buy. These are lead-free guaranteed (yes, I did my research). AMACO/Brent has been putting high-quality items for the last forty years.

Can I finish this? I do not know. But the thrill of actually touching something, making something with my own bare hands is too exciting not to resist. I would not even want to think about the price anymore!

The Chinese New Year happens to fall on Valentine’s Day this year – all the more for people to wear red, don’t you think? There has been a couple of features on TV and the newspapers about how to attract positive karma in one’s life this year. The Chinese believes that each year, the strategies for acquiring peace, luck and good karma change so they advise new feng shui tips, especially if it involves homes.

One of the feng shui enhancers are wind chimes. One must choose balanced wind chimes, with the appropriate number of tubes and material. Sometimes, they would advice wood chimes or metal ones, depending on the year on the Chinese calendar.

Wind chimes have always been part of different cultures. Originally made to drive away evil spirits and birds, they have also been used for meditation. Nowadays, they make wonderful home accents, with its sounds soothe tired spirits. Wind chimes have always provided calm, that is why it has always been place strategically around the house, mostly in lanais, porches, decks or in balconies, where the breeze enters a house.

The  bamboo wind chimes are usually seen outdoors, specifically in the garden, as they seem to blend within the environment and make pretty, decorative accents. You can make a Hawaiian paradise with these adorable accents from Outdora:

The sound of aluminum wind chimes are a different sound altogether. For example, Corinthian Bells wind chimes are tuned to sound like the ringing of distant church bells.  You can also choose between alto and soprano wind chimes, complete with 10 musical scales. Usually these types of wind chimes have adjustable activity control.

  • Here are some samples of the Spheres Soprano Wind Chimes:
    Pentatonic
    Chinese
    Quartal
    Mongolian
    Aquarian
    Hawaiian
    Balinese
    Japanese
    Gypsy
    Whole Tone

I personally like the wooden types as I think they produce more natural sounds and would make me imagine I am close to nature like the mountains and seas.

Here is an alarming fact  from ABC News:

Some 1.9 million women are physically assaulted annually in the United States, and 15 percent to 25 percent of all American women will report a sexual attack or rape at some time in their lives, according to studies conducted by the Justice Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While there has been a great disadvantage of welcoming women into the workforce, and that spells equality rights for everyone, we must not disregard the specific needs of women as well. These are the right to a maternity leave with pay, a breastfeeding room/refrigerator for lactating mothers and occupational hazards or protection for them like womens work clothes or  womens boots especially if they work in the field.

These numbers are alarmingly high but as a woman, you do not need to panic as you can still protect yourself. You just have to be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts and be brave.

While traveling alone:
1. Make sure that what you wear is something you can run into. High heels and scarves are a hindrance to running if someone is attacking you. If you need to be in those kinds of outfit, consider dressing comfortably during traveling and changing once you are at your destination.

2. Make eye contact. Studies show that attackers go for women who are meek-looking. Making eye contact will give you a chance to possible scare an attacker or send a signal that you are someone who will most likely make a scene or fight back.

3. Be alert. It would not help if you are talking on your phone or listening to music with your headphones. Make sure that your hands are free just in case an attacker grabs you. It would be best to have a pepper spray in your bag, easily reached, at all times.

You can even use this, as this is a fashion accessory and a slight tactic to scare or surprise your attacker that you might be carrying a handgun. This mace gun retails for $51 at SafetyGirl.com and can spray up to 25 ft!

I have been getting a lot of questions about starting a blog and how to maintain it. It is basically easy. You would not need web hosting if you start with the free blogging platform services around like Blogger. You can redirect or forward your domain name to your blogspot blog. However, I also would want to recommend using WordPress as your blogging platform so you might want to consider getting webhosting services for that – it is easier. You can find a lot of website hosting options online, my domains are hosted by a friend who is a reseller of web site hosting packages so I can get it cheaper and she maintains and installs everything for me so consider me lucky.

Make sure you are updated with web hosting news as well, like when to upgrade your WordPress every now and then. You can find webhosting news on your host’s blog or news online.

You can always register the domain name with your host, but make sure that the registration is in your name. If you will be managing a business (an online store for example), you can get dedicated hosting.
