Back when I was single, married women would often tell me that once I get married, it is imperative that I still have my own space, literally and figuratively. Never sacrifice the space for your clothes, shoes, bags and vanities. You must always remain a single woman, in terms of closet space. I wish I had paid attention to that advice when I do get married. Five years into my marriage, there is still no space for “my stuff”. It has always been relegated to the bottom of the list because of “baby” stuff and “other” stuff. When I watched Sex and the City 2, I understood the impact of having a his and her space, in terms of bathroom and dressing rooms. Once we get our own home, I will make sure that I will include a dressing room in our house floor plan. And I wouldn’t mind if it is as small as the one Carrie Bradshaw had when she was still single.

I went through the home plans at HousePlansandMore.com and the first thing I filtered for was a dressing room and a big walk-in closet. There really are great homes plans on this website, and you can search by house style(classic, contemporary, ranch, etc) or a house feature that you like. In my case I searched for a house plan that had a dressing room!

declutterThere’s no two ways about it, women love to shop. But more often than not you find that although women’s wardrobes are overflowing with clothes, many haven’t been worn in nearly a year. When it comes to clothes women tend to be a bit of hoarders.

Before you decide how to get rid of your clothes put aside a few hours when you can organise your clothes into piles.

  1. Clothes you love to wear and do so often
  2. Clothes you haven’t worn in a year and are surprised are still in your wardrobe in the first place
  3. Clothes that don’t fit you anymore and don’t hold onto them until you lose the 5kgs you have been trying to work off since January.
  4. Clothes that will never lose their value like a designer dress or jacket.
  5. Clothes that need a simple alteration to make them fresh and new
  6. Clothes you just don’t like anymore

Once you have sorted out your piles it will be clearer to see what you want to keep and what you don’t want to. The first people you can and should sell all your unwanted clothes to are your friends and family. Friends are always borrowing each other’s clothes and there might be something in your wardrobe they have been dying to have. If you can get rid of most of your old clothes this way then it will save you a lot of time and hassle trying to set up a garage sale or internet page. The few clothes your friends don’t want you can donate to charity. You would have helped a person in need and cleaned out your wardrobe at the same time.

Once you have finally cleaned out your wardrobe of unwanted items you can now organise it. Put your clothes back into your wardrobe according to the following sections.

  1. Work Clothes
  2. Going out clothes
  3. Home clothes
  4. Gym Clothes
  5. Sleeping Clothes and underwear
